Only 11% of films that year were directed by women. To help change that, we teamed up with Melissa McCarthy, Dee Rees ("Mudbound"), and Nancy Meyers ("The Intern") — along with Women In Film — to create an integrated program that brought together the world's largest retailer and Hollywood's biggest night.
Each director was given a single creative challenge: make a 60-second film inspired by a Walmart delivery box. The three films ran during the Oscar broadcast and showed the range of what women filmmakers do when handed a budget and a blank page.
Walmart extended its support by giving an Academy Gold intern, Tracey Aivaz, the chance to direct her own short — which premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival.
